Health Management Associates, Inc along with its subsidiaries, operate general acute care hospitals in non-urban communities. As of December 31, 2009, the Company operated 55 hospitals with a total of 8,418 beds in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and West Virginia. On August 28, 2008, the Company completed the sale of Southwest Regional Medical Center. On June 1, 2008, the Company closed the Woman?s Center at Dallas Regional Medical Center (the Center). On January 1, 2008, the Company closed Gulf Coast Medical Center (GCMC). In July 2010, Health Management Associates, Inc. acquired a 60% controlling interest in three Shands HealthCare hospitals, Shands Lake Shore located in Lake City, Florida, Shands Live Oak, located in Live Oak, Florida, and Shands Starke, located in Starke, Florida.
